Cenotes

 

Riviera Maya is home to a mass amount of cenotes that are open for tours and exploration. What is a cenote? It is a natural swimming hole that has been created over millions of years by the collapse of limestone bedrock. Many ancient Mayans believed that cenotes were the "portal to the Gods" and went to them to communicate with these other worldly beings.

The Mayan Ruins

 

The Mayan Ruins include a number of archeological sites that are associated with the ancient Mayan culture. There are a variety of Mayan ruins throughout the world, but many of them are located in Mexico. Ruins found in the Mayan Riviera include:

  • Chichen Itza

  • The Tulum  Ruins

  • Uxmal

  • Coba 

  • and more!

 

 

Rio Secreto

 

Rio Secreto is a gorgeous underground river located in the Mayan Riviera. This system of caves has been carved out over centuries and stretches almost 8 miles in length! Small group tours are taken through Rio Secreto where you can hike or float through the caves. This is an amazing adventure where you can see bats and other creatures, plus millions stalactites and stalagmites.

Akumal

 

Akumal is a private bay area that stands for "place of turtles". This is a popular place for snorkelling, and you are almost gauranteed to see turtles swimming through the glassy waters!
