Privateer Days (Liverpool)
What is a Privateer? After the American Revolution, "privateers" were hired to carry out a form of legal piracy on the seas. They would steal ships, ambush shipments, and cause chaos all around. In 1777 the families of the area were given the right to fight back to defend their homes, and Liverpool quickly emerged as one of the leading privateer ports in North America.
While there are certainly no privateers roaming the seas today, Liverpool is still known as the "Port of the Privateers" and hosts a yearly festival in honor of it's history.
